Your pet can give the gift of life!

Did you know that 1 out of every 10 people entering the hospital will need blood? Did you also know that 4.5 million Americans would die each year without a blood transfusion? We all know how important it is to help with the human blood shortage by donating blood but did you ever think about your beloved animals?

Human hospitals are not the only institutions suffering from blood shortages. The issue is even worse in veterinary medicine. Commercial veterinary blood banks are in such high demand that there is often a 4 week wait period to receive blood products. The Las Vegas Veterinary Referral Center is trying to help its patients and the hospitals of the Las Vegas Valley by establishing a volunteer community blood bank. Our local animals are saving other local animals by donating the gift of life-blood.

Volunteers are always needed and your pet may be eligible.

Your beloved pet(s) can become an integral part of saving the lives of other animals but will also reap the benefits of registering as an official canine or feline blood donor.

All potential blood donor candidates will receive free basic donor screening to determine whether they are eligible as a donor. Screening will include some, if not all, of the following: free physical examination, basic blood work, infectious disease screening and blood typing. We are looking for young to middle aged, well behaved, healthy dogs and cats that meet the following weight requirements: cats-10# or greater, dogs-half pint group 30-50# and full pint group >50#. Cats of all blood types are welcome; dogs will be typed and kept as donors if they are found to be universal. Each donor will receive; aside form the testing and examinations, a credit for a free blood product for every donation made. Rescue groups are strongly encouraged to participate because for every blood donation made by the rescue organization, they receive a credit for one unit of blood that can be used by any other dog in their care.
